Earnings season is now in full swing and with that we do our customary look by selecting a few companies each day that are scheduled to announce their earnings in the next several days as well as ETFs with holdings in those companies. To keep you abreast of earnings season, today we have again compiled a list of some big name companies who have earnings to announce this week.
As many investors are well aware, earnings season can be frustrating, as they can drive the price of a stock either up or down depending on the news. Not only that, if a stock has a significant weighting in a particular ETF, that ETF can also be affected accordingly. With that said, we wanted to shed some light on a few of the many ETFs that have the potential of being impacted by the volatility of their underlying holdings as shown below. Upon examining the table below, we have noticed that some ETFs like the iShares Dow Jones U.S. Energy Sector with more than a 20% weighting in Exxon Mobil (XOM) and the Market Vectors-Gaming with about a 12% holding in Las Vagas Sands (LVS) will swing depending on the news of XOM and LVS, respectively. So if you are an investor in those exchange traded funds, you may want to keep a close watch on them. Another example is the iShares S&P Global Timber & Forestry Index (WOOD). Both MeadWestvaco and Wyerhaeuser are parts of the underlying stocks of WOOD with a combined weighting of 13%. Since both of these companies are scheduled to have their earnings release this week, WOOD is also another ETF that deserves to be put on your watch list.
